Christmas Tornado Records Fall
CHRISTMAS STORM REPORTS, 2012, W=Wind, T= Tornado, H=Hail
As was expected by the weather industry in general, the Christmas tornado outbreak of 2012 will indeed go down in the record books as the worst in history for a Christmas Day. So far, there have been 6 fatalities in the entire storm system reported, with the NWS Storm Prediction Center showing 31 individual tornado reports, 77 damaging wind reports and 3 hail reports, totalling 111 total reports of significant severe weather. The Storm Prediction Center also showed on it's storm report of the event, 17 injuries, 15 tornado related and 2 severe t-storm related, though other accounts are higher in storms in Mississippi. Overall a day that for some will be remembered with pain for some, relief for others, and for many, total obliviousness of the storm danger that they were in while celebrating Christmas in the Southeast United States. It also includes a tornado that struck Mobile, caught on video. What can be done to make more people aware? We at WeatherCall have a few ideas.
PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS SITUATION
When NOAA's Storm Prediction Center issues a "PDS" watch, that means it is a particularly dangerous situation. These types of tornado watches precede MAJOR OUTBREAKS of LONG TRACK DEADLY TORNADOES. 2012 Hurricane Season Teaches Tornado Lessons
The 2012 Hurricane Season, which ended November 30, will of course be remembered for Hurricane Sandy just in the same vein that the 2005 Season is most remembered by Katrina. Sandy, a very well forecast Tropical then 'Extra-tropical' cyclone changed the landscape of much of the Northeastern United States and will have done so for generations. Prolific flooding, storm surges of huge amounts of water into areas residents did not expect flooding, and an unprecedentedly impactful hit on the "city that doesn't sleep" certainly brought a new respect for these tropical systems to this and following generations. Other than the potential strength of these Hurricane/Nor'easters, there was another lesson learned this season in a smaller and less impactful tropical storm that raked across the state of Florida by a lesser headlined storm, Tropical Storm Debby. Safety first. That is an often used motto at most of America's companies and corporations. The people tasked with implementing the plans that bring that motto to life are often viewed as being a little over-protective. But after working with many of those in charge of a facility's safety plan, there are a lot of things they have thought of and prevented even before you may have seen it as a threat.
When a tornado warning is issued for your county, they are tasked with a tremendous responsibility. Do they decide to suspend operations while hunting for more specific and credible information, potentially costing thousands or more in revenue? Or, do they gamble with the safety of their staff and customers? Even evacuating and sheltering have risks associated with them.
